The cultivation of vines in Feltre
has its roots in the sixteenth
century

The cultivation of vines in Feltre (Belluno) has its roots in the sixteenth century, as highlighted in the β€œStatuto dei vignaioli del Monte Aurin” Statute of the vine growers of Monte Aurin (a hill near the city), preserved in the Historical Archive of the Municipality.

This ancient document, dated 1517, a precursor to modern appellation regulations, responded to the request to guarantee the quality of wine by the emerging city bourgeoisie. In 1557, Lorenzo Donato, the illustrious rector of Feltre, praised the generous wine production in the Feltrino in his end-of-term report to the Doge of Venice, also highlighting the prosperity of trade with some distinct regions beyond the Alps.

Although many documents preceding the Statute have been lost, the winemaking tradition has endured over time. Today, the Coste del Feltrino Consortium, consisting of 14 companies, is investing in the revitalization of local viticulture, planting new vineyards, and cultivating indigenous varieties. The goal is to preserve this ancient tradition and offer excellent wines, contributing to the economy and promotion of the territory.
